Do you have difficulty getting to sleep? Do you wake up during the night and cannot get back to sleep? Do you wake up very early in the morning and cannot return to sleep?
If any of these are familiar to you, then you may be suffering from insomnia.
Some insomnia is triggered by specific events. These may include significant loss ( e.g. a family bereavement, loss of a job) and stressful situations / traumas. As the person gradually acclimatises to the loss, the insomnia may disappear. If the insomnia has been triggered by a stressful situation, once that situation ceases, then the insomnia may also cease. Such cases are known as transient insomnia.
In other cases, insomnia is long-term, rather than short-term and is commonly due to worry and anxiety. Sufferers may find that they cannot 'switch off', as if their minds are full of thoughts of things they must do or should have done. These intrusive, worrying thoughts prevent and/or disturb sleep. Sometimes the vicious circle of worrying about getting to sleep - which then, of course, prevents the person from sleeping - is established.
Hypnotherapy can help with both transient and long-term insomnia. By taking a detailed personal history, the causes of insomnia can be established, and these will be the focus of the hypnotherapeutic treatment.
A hypnotic trance is usually experienced as being very relaxing and soothing. Patients are taught to hypnotise themselves so that they can enter a relaxed state. Once in a state of relaxation, they are then usually able to sleep.
In addition, treatment deals with worrying/intrusive thoughts by diminishing their potency, freeing the person's mind from them and allowing their mind to rest.
Therapy continues by 'installing' any pleasant, soothing thoughts and images that the person can draw upon as a further aid to inducing sleep.
Treatment length varies from person to person: a minimum of three sessions is recommended.
