The Body Mass Index

This is a method of calculating your ideal body weight from your height

The BMI is a way of measuring your weight, taking into account your height. Your therapist can calculate this for you, or you can do it yourself using the formula:


BMI         =                   Weight in kg               
                         [Height in m] x [Height in m]



If you prefer to use imperial units use the formula:

BMI         =                                 Weight in lb                        x  703
                    [Height in inches] x [Height in inches]

'Healthy weight', 'overweight' and 'obese' are defined by reference to your BMI - see the table below.

Underweight Below 18.5
Healthy weight 18.5 to 25
Overweight 25 to 30
Obese Over 30
